imagine a collab between cabaret voltaire and eric copeland mixed by the scientist and you�ll start to enter the sphere of robin asselman. all spectrums explored. the off kilter dub waltz of �16-16� stutters into view with a heavy and heady rolling dread, whilst inaudible vocal snippets and flatlining synth lines echo and enforce a melee of repetition and danger. �fitness talk� perhaps best showcases assel�s interest in dubwise production techniques, and his ability to soak up a palette of sound and turn it into something truly his own. soft familiar bass pads provide the backbone here for all out sample mayhem, a space where recognisable dub effects and sonars vibe alongside absolutely unsettling outer samples of jarring vocals and inaudible upset, purposefully mixed to jolt ears into unfamiliar territories. being the nephew of dj marcelle, this experimental approach and inspiring concept of pushing samples to the absolute limits of their origin to create a new unexplored path is clearly something that has been fed down from marcelle to robin throughout his youth....

another odd and rather good 12inch from hyv. we don t know much, but they seem to just know. tip! tracks from hyvinkää, finland. written by juho kahilainen and tomi kesäniemi. both boring family men, middle-aged and middle-class. however, they ve been here long enough to learn a trick or two. nods to detroit, nods to acid. a mid-tempo track tape loader sounds like a 909 trapped in swamp. fast and jazzy r train funk pays a tribute to detroit-legends with a decent 303 line to drink beer to. the tower that stands in the woods is a dubby slow-down before suomi 100 acid celebrates finlands 100th anniversary with lyrics that deal with recession and the finnish government s fair deal to cut everyone s wage.

few artists can claim to have their own distinctive �musical voice�: a style of composition and production that listeners instantly recognize. for starters, it takes years of experimentation to perfect, and most people simply don�t have the patience, talent or skills to pull it off.
ali kuru is one of those rare producers whose music sounds like nothing else around. the istanbul-based artist has spent the best part of a decade honing his trademark style � a fragrant and intoxicating aural brew that combines a myriad of influences with atmospheric field recordings and snaking, mind-altering middle eastern instrumentation � via releases for the likes of luxa flex, kalisah, sound architecture and, most recently, leng.

house music maestro louie vega returns to nurvous to remix disco hit �up jumped the devil� by john davis & the monster orchestra. originally released in 1977 on sam records, �up jumped the devil� featured music performances from some of philly�s finest musicians, many of whom also featured on albums by the salsoul orchestra. among them were michael �sugar bear� foreman on bass, drummer charles collins and guitarist dennis harris. percussion came from larry washington, whilst don renaldo provided the strings and horns. with a rugged and rough rhythm section and blazing horn parts, the track was an absolute bomb amongst disco djs at the time and continues to shine as a gem today.
